Gambia U-20 team strive to excel in Africa U-20 Youth Championship

The Gambia U-20 team will strive to excel in the 2023 Africa U-20 Youth Championship, as the continent’s bi-annual cadet biggest football edges closer.

The 2023 Africa Youth Championship is expected to begin in January 2023 in Cairo, Egypt.

The Gambia U-20 team finished as runners-up in the 2022 WAFU Zone A U-20 football tournament hosted in Mauritania, after slipping to Senegal U-20 team 1-0 in a final played in Nouakchott.

The Young Scorpions will use the next three months to prepare themselves fit enough for the 2023 Africa U-20 Youth Championship.

The Gambia made their debut in Africa U-20 Youth Championship in 2007 hosted in Congo, where they won bronze medal after thrashing Zambia 3-1 in their third-place play-off match.

The Young Scorpions made their second appearance in Africa U-20 Youth Championship in 2011 hosted in South Africa but were eliminated in the group phase of the tournament.

The Gambia U-20 team made their third appearance in Africa U-20 Youth Championship in 2021 hosted in Mauritania, where they won bronze medal following their 4-2 post-match penalty shootouts win over Tunisia after regulation time ended goalless in their third-place play-off match played in Mauritania.

The Young Scorpions made their debut in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007 hosted in Canada but were eliminated in the second round of the global junior biggest football jamboree after losing to Austria 2-1.
