GAFA celebrates int’l day of person with disabilities with football match

The Gambia Amputee Football Association (GAFA) on Tuesday celebrated the international day of person with disabilities with a football match between Kanifing Municipality Amputee team and West Coast Amputee team at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium.

West Coast Region Amputee team opened the scores in the 23rd minute of the match through Lamin King Jawara from Ousman Jatta’s brilliant assist.

Buba Jatta could have scored the second goal for West Coast Region mid-away into the first half from the penalty spot but he missed the target thus the first half ended 1-0 in favour of West Coast Region Amputee team.

As action resumed in the second half, Kanifing Municipality gaffer brought in several fresh legs to reinforce his attacking department.

Sarjo Suwaneh levelled matters for Kanifing Municipality during the second half.

Speaking to reporters shortly after the match, second vice president, Gambia Amputee Association, Pa Sulay Jobe, stated that December 3rd is set aside as the world disability day.

He stated that the theme for this year’s celebration is to amplify the leadership of person with disabilities for an inclusion and sustainable world for all.

Jobe noted that the match was organised for players to showcase football as a way to celebrate the event which is celebrated worldwide.

He revealed that the association was formed three years ago, adding that there a big stride and big achievements that have been registered.

Jobe recalled that in 2018, The Gambia amputee team went to Tanzania for AFCON and were ranked ninth.

He further revealed this year they went to Egypt and were ranked seventh in Africa.

He stated that they played back-to-back AFCON qualifiers but failed to qualify for the AFCON.

Jobe further stated that they also failed to qualify for the World Cup.

He added that they would organise series of international friendly matches for the players to showcase skills and talents.

Jobe stated that former national team player Bakary Barrow recently signed a professional contract.

He thanked the government of The Gambia for supporting the team.

Jobe called on philanthropies and NGOs to complement government’s efforts.

The match was witnessed by high profound dignitaries.
