Gambia U-20 start training for Africa U-20 Youth Championship

The Gambia U-20 team yesterday, Monday started intensive training for the 2023 Africa U-20 Youth Championship at the National Technical Training Centre in Yundum.

 

The junior Scorpions, who finished as runners-up in the 2022 WAFU Zone A U-20 football tournament, will use their training sessions to prepare themselves fit for the continent’s cadet bi-annual biggest football showpiece.

The Gambia made their debut appearance in Africa U-20 Youth Championship in 2007 held in Congo, Brazzaville, where they won bronze medal after thrashing Zambia 3-1 in their third-place play-off match played in Brazzaville.

The junior Scorpions made their second appearance in Africa U-20 Youth Championship in 2011 hosted in South Africa, but were eliminated in the group phase of the tournament.

The Gambia made their third appearance in Africa U-20 Youth Championship in 2021 held in Mauritania, where they won bronze medal following their 4-2 post-match penalty shootouts win over Tunisia after regulation time ended goalless in their third-place play-off match played in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

The 2023 Africa U-20 Youth Championship is set to be hosted in Egypt.

It would be recalled that The Gambia U-20 team lost to Senegal U-20 team 1-0 in the final of the 2022 WAFU Zone A U-20 football tournament played in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
