Gambia suffer another setback in World Cup qualifiers

The Gambia senior national team has suffered yet another setback in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Scorpions slipped to Ivory Coast 2-0 in their second qualifier match played at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dares Salam, Tanzania, yesterday.

The Gambia lost to Burundi 3-2 in their opening qualifier match played on Thursday 16th November 2023 prior to their match with Ivory Coast.

Coach Tom Saintfiet and his charges needed a win against Ivory Coast to maintain their dreams of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Christian Kouame opened the scores for Ivory Coast in the 45th minute of the match from a brilliant rebound.

Sekou Fofana scored the second goal for the Ivorians in the 85th minute of the match from an excellent strike.

The win earns Ivory Coast top-spot in Group F of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with 6 points.

The Gambia is still pointless in Group F of the global biggest football showpiece qualifiers after two group matches.
