The project was funded by European Union with other partner support from the World Amputee Football Federation and STAND, a remarkable move through inclusivity in sports development in the country.
The historic launching event was held with commencement o f a three-day strategic and intensive Women’s Amputee Training Camp at the FIFA Goal project in Yundum.
The training brought together young promising, and energetic girls with the zeal to break barriers through the football pitch.
The initiative was designed to expose these young energetic females to compete not only at national level, but to global football completions, while taking along education as a valuable tool for national development. The initiative was viewed as a tool for women empowerment by building their capacities to realize their fullest potentials through sports.
However, GAFA officials say that currently there are only three Male Amputee football teams in the Kanifing Municipality, West Coast Region and in the North Bank Region while there are also anticipations for the formation of other Amputee Football teams in the Central River Region, Lower Region and in the Upper River Region.
GAFA officials outlined that to ensure proper representation of both male female amputee teams in the world of football, there will be formation of female amputee football teams in all regions.
Meanwhile, participants underwent various topics including expectations, introduction to life skills, theories on laws of the game, technical football training, and the power of concentration. These include an analysis video play on Women Amputee in Africa, safe guarding in Women Amputee, and conflict resolution among other educative sessions.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Veronic Aisha Malack, president of Women Amputee Football Association who also doubles as the project course coordinator, stated that the project is breaking barriers, rewriting and opening doors to a new era with the inclusion of women in their sports.
"The live skills training she said was aimed to ensure proper and effective translation into football," Malack said.
Ebrima Bah, representative from STAND-Gambia outlined that for too long amputee football was computed only among men, while females faced double discrimination, underlining that this has now become a history through the launch of the project.
Bah emphasized that rehabilitation does not only end at the hospital but also extends to the football pitch.
Baboucarr Jobe, second vice president of The Gambia Amputee Female Football Association and Lamin Sambou, a representative of The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) both gave key guidance with words of inspiration for the young team.
In a similar development prior to the training camp, The Gambia Amputee Football Association team has initially participated in various African Cup of nations including Tanzania which was competed in 2021.
They participate in the 2024 edition held Egypt in 2024.
They also participated in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Dakar, Senegal.
