The Gambia U-20 coach, Abdoulie Bojang has hailed the performance of his players despite losing the final of the Africa Cup of Nations U-20 tournament against Senegal in Egypt on Saturday.

Coach Bojang was speaking during a post-match interview following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Senegal in the finals of the U-20 African Cup of Nations.

The Young Teranga Lions of Senegal scored two headers in the opening minutes of each half to condemn the Young Scorpions of The Gambia to silver medals.

It is the first silver medal secured by The Gambia after two third-place finishes in 2007 and 2021.

“My team put up a respectable performance but conceded goals that we should not have. It was difficult and we made some tactical changes but they [Senegal] were organised in defence and we could not penetrate,” said The Gambia U-20 coach.

“We tried set pieces but again we could not score. We were unable to click in midfield. There were fewer forward runs and forward passes, as well as a gap between the midfield and the strikers.”

The Young Scorpions coach went on to call on Gambians to rally behind his team as they look to participate in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia in a couple of months.

“Let Gambians continue to rally behind the team; it is a very good team. This is football, and one has to win. The team did very well. The last AFCON we took bronze and silver in this one, so to maintain the team, let us all be behind the team and give them moral and financial support. We in return will assure them that we will keep on doing better and one day our time will come,” Bojang said.

Meanwhile, the team will return to Banjul tomorrow, Tuesday via Turkish Airlines and for the exceptional performance in reaching their first final as well as securing a World Cup berth, the GFF has organised an official welcome procession for them.

According to GFF, upon arrival at the airport, the Young Scorpions’ parade will at the Football House in Kanifing.
