Head coach of the Gambia U-20 team, Abdoulie Bojang, has updated the media about the team’s preparations ahead of the 2024 West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone A U-20 football tournament to be hosted in Liberia.

Coach Bojang was speaking to the GFF Media shortly after the end of their screening exercise at the National Technical Training Centre in Old Yundum on Wednesday.

Coach Bojang revealed that they are in the 5th week of their screening exercise.

“The screening has been going very well since the start of the preparations and players responded positively.

“I know it wasn’t an easy job to identify or select the best players out of the lot.” Coach Bojang said.

Bojang stated that they need to strengthen the team before the commencement of the tournament.

“The players that went to the African Games who are within the age bracket would train with the current U-20 team,’’ Coach said.

Coach Bojang pointed out that he would adjust his team as the competition getting closer.

“The team didn’t have depth, so this time we want to have a good squad depth.”

“We need players who have energy and technique to make forward passes. We need players who can attack and defend depending on the opposition’s football style,” Coach Bojang said.

Coach Bojang added that they needed a leader like Alagie Saine who can command the defence line and the team as well, adding that they also need good goalkeepers.

“Looking at the past U-20 team, some of the players have played couple of international games before the U-20 championship,” he recalled.

“This week, we are training five times from Monday to Friday because the competition is getting closer. A lot of works need to be done in terms of the tactical part of it. The last 2-3 weeks, we checked the fitness level of the players,” Coach Bojang pointed out.

Coach Bojang is expecting to put a good team at the end of his training sessions to represent the country in the upcoming WAFU Zone A U-20 football tournament, adding that that they need to play some international friendly matches to prepare themselves well for the championship.

He urged Gambians to support to the team.
