Burundi crush Gambia in World Cup qualifier

Burundi yesterday, Thursday, handed The Gambia its first defeat of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

 

The due squared off at the Dares Salam Stadium in their opening game of the qualifiers with Burundi securing a 3-2 win over The Gambia senior national team.

Goals from Abedi Bigirimana, Federic Nyabiyumva and Sudi Abdallah in the 31st, 35th and 75th minutes for Burundi ensured captain Omar Colley and Ebrima Colley’s goals (45+4th and 90+8th) minutes were mere consolations for the Scorpions of The Gambia.

The Gambia and Burundi have never qualified for the World Cup since the inception of the global biggest football showpiece in 1930.

The Gambia hope to recover on Monday when they face Ivory Coast in their second challenge in the qualifiers.
