African Para Games underway in Accra

The African Para Games yesterday, Monday, kicked off in Accra, Ghana, with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons gracing the historic opening ceremony.

Ghana's capital city, Accra set the stage for the curtain-raiser of the inaugural edition of the Games, scheduled to take place until September 12.

Athletes celebrated as they took to the Bukom Boxing Arena during an event also graced by Ghana’s sports minister, Mustapha Ussif.

Minister Ussif addressed the crowd and delivered a statement from Ghana's Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia who was absent due to another official function. African Paralympic Committee president Samson Deen also delivered a statement.

The Gambia is being represented at the first Para Games by Chef de Mission Hagie Drammeh, the Gambia Paralympic Committee Admin Secretary Mama Faal-Kah and two champions Salifu Kujabi and Ali Kah will be among the top African tennis players fighting for the crown.

The Gambia Paralympic Committee (NPC Gambia) thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sports through the National Sport Council for sponsoring the team’s participation in the first-ever stage Para Games in Africa.

Meanwhile, Ali and Salifu were yesterday classified by the International Tennis Federation experts in Ghana and given the green light to compete.
