These men and women, who have spent decades traversing the corridors of the Courts, shaping legal practice, and offering counsel to younger generations, deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. In recognising their invaluable contributions, we not only honour their legacy but also reaffirm our commitment to preserving the values they fought to instil in the legal profession. This article is a tribute to them, a celebration of their sacrifice, and an acknowledgment and appreciation of the crucial role they have played in shaping the legal landscape of The Gambia.

To understand the significance of Senior Lawyers in The Gambia, one must first recognise what it means to be a Senior Counsel. This title is not merely an honorary designation, it is a reflection of years of dedication, sacrifice, and unparalleled expertise in the legal field. Senior Counsel have long been the stewards of legal practice, the guardians of ethics, and the paragons of professional excellence. For many of these lawyers, the journey to becoming Senior Counsel was long and arduous, requiring immense personal sacrifice and a lifelong commitment to the legal profession. They did not enter the legal field seeking fame or wealth, but out of a genuine love for justice and a desire to contribute to society in meaningful ways.

Over the years, they have played pivotal roles in landmark legal decisions, guided the development of Gambian jurisprudence, and mentored countless young lawyers including myself who have followed in their footsteps. The history of the Gambian legal system cannot be written without acknowledging the pivotal role that Senior Counsel have played in its development. From the days when the Old Courthouse on Wellington Street served as the centre of legal proceedings, to the modern facilities on Independence Drive, these lawyers have witnessed the evolution of the system and helped steer it through times of change. They were present during some of the most significant moments in our country’s legal history, times of political upheaval, the 1981 bloody coup, the 22 year of authoritarian rule, legal reforms, and social transformation. Through all of this, the Senior Counsel have remained unparalleled in their commitment to the law, ensuring that justice was served in the face of adversity. Their sacrifices extended far beyond the courtroom, they have been pillars of support for the legal fraternity, always willing to offer advice, mentorship, and guidance. What distinguishes these Senior Counselfrom other practitioners is their unflinching commitment to the principles of justice, fairness and ethics. Their work was never just about winning cases or earning fees, it was about ensuring that the law was applied equitably, and that those who sought justice could rely on the integrity of the system. They dedicated their careers to making sure that the legal profession remained true to its foundational values. This commitment was particularly evident in the days when the old Courthouse on Wellington Street served as the heart oflegal proceedings in country. The building, though not as grand as the new Court House on Independence Drive, was a symbol of the resilience and determination of those who practiced within its walls. For many Senior Counsel, it was here that they began their careers, working long hours and facing daunting challenges, all for the sake of justice. The move from the old Courthouse on Wellington Street to the new Court House on Independence Drive marked a significant shift in the legal landscape of The Gambia. While the new facilities offered modern amenities, they also signified a new era for the Gambian legal profession. This transition, however, was not without its challenges. As the profession evolved, so too did the expectations place on legal practitioners. For Senior Counsel, this meant adapting to changing legal frameworks, new technologies, and shifting societal expectations. It is also vital that we pause to honour and remember those Senior Counsel who are no longer with us. It is also important that the Executive of The Gambia Bar Association recognise and honour the contributions of these Senior Counsel. A more formal system for celebrating their achievements and dedication to the legal profession should be established. I call for the institution of a special day dedicated to celebrating these giants, perhaps in conjunction with the legal year celebrations. This day could be an opportunity to reflect on their contributions, offer awards for outstanding service, and give recognition to those who have shaped the law in The Gambia. Moreover, the Executive of the Gambia Bar Association should actively seek the counsel and guidance of these Senior Counsel in all matters that affect the future of the profession. Their experience is an invaluable resource that should not be ignored. They have lived through the changes in the legal system and have much wisdom to offer on how to preserve and enhance the integrity of the profession.
