A DETERMINED NATION: SENEGAL VOTE 2024

Nov 19, 2024, 1:00 PM | Article By: D M. Badjie Political Scientist / Commentator

The fact that Senegalese Political Party, PASTEEF, won both the Presidential and Legislative elections in 2024, is a clear manifestation of a determined Nation and its people to effect system change.

The government of the former President Sall has now been effectively confined to the dustbin of history in Senegal. There is no doubt that excellences Diomaye Faye and Ousman Sonko are formidable political contenders in Senegalese politics. The good news is that tribalism and regionalism did not surface in these elections. Senegalese must be congratulated for the exercise of political maturity and Patriotism.

Both elections were conducted in a relatively peaceful atmosphere. Both the former government of Macky Sall and the current government of Diomaye Faye must be congratulated for ensuring free, fair and transparent elections in Senegal. It is a victory for democracy. It is hoped that other pending elections in Africa will emulate Senegal’s credible postures in politics. The Senegalese example is a lesson for the rest of the African political leadership.

The people’s power is greater than the financial and authoritative machinations of the political leadership. We have seen what happened in this country in the 2016 elections. We have also seen the contradictions in the 2019 Presidential election results and the 2023 Local election results. It must be stated that the 2026 elections outcome will depend on the mood of the country. It must be borne in mind that there is a new wave of generational consciousness which transcends tribalism, regionalism, religious and authoritarian tendencies.

The Youth factor( men and women) in political participation is all important for aspiring contenders to take note of. This is an Age of Enlightenment. Taking the people for granted could produce surprising outcomes in the elections. The objective conditions of the people will determine their awareness and such awareness will determine their political behavior. It will not be an easy ride to power as in the days of political ignorance.

Politicians in the country therefore, will be expected to convince the people and to convince them well on their agendas for development and not on agendas for political vendetta. The country must move forward. A political Party Mobilization Platform that sells best will be the winner to the seat of power. Although all political Party leaders are hopeful contenders, it must be recognized that the political atmosphere is polluted. In such a situation political overestimation could produce devastating outcomes. Experience has shown that Gambians are unpredictable in political behavior. Hope all will end well when the Gambia decides in 2026.
