The recent acknowledgement in the headlines of The Point Newspaper of 5 August,2026 by the United States of America’s contribution by The Gambia to the celebration of the 250th Anniversary of American Independence is deeply appreciated.
On behalf of many Gambians who have long admired the enduring partnership between our two nations, I warmly congratulate the Government and people of the United States on this historic milestone.
For 250 years, America has stood as a global symbol of democracy, constitutional government, innovation, entrepreneurship, opportunity, and individual liberty. Those ideals have inspired countless nations, including The Gambia.
As Founder and President of the American Chamber of Commerce of The Gambia, I have devoted many years to strengthening commercial, educational, and people-to-people relations between our two countries. Throughout my public and private service, I have consistently believed that stronger engagement with the United States represents one of the greatest opportunities for The Gambia’s economic transformation.
The relationship between our countries has never been defined merely by diplomacy.
It has been defined by partnership.
American support has helped strengthen democratic institutions, improve healthcare, expand educational opportunities, enhance food security, promote entrepreneurship, and support private sector development in The Gambia.
Thousands of Gambians have benefited from American educational institutions, professional exchanges, business partnerships, and development programmes. Likewise, the Gambian diaspora in the United States continues to make valuable contributions to American society while serving as an important bridge between our two nations.
For these reasons, the recent recognition of The Gambia during America’s anniversary celebrations carries special significance.
It demonstrates that friendship is valued.
It reminds us that even small nations can make meaningful contributions to enduring international partnerships.
Yet friendship also provides an opportunity for candid and constructive dialogue.
It is in that spirit that I respectfully appeal to the Government of the United States to review recent visa and immigration measures affecting Gambian citizens.
Every sovereign nation has an unquestionable right to protect its borders, safeguard its national security, and enforce its immigration laws. The United States has exercised that responsibility throughout its history, and those concerns deserve respect.
However, it is equally important that policy distinguishes between those who abuse immigration systems and the overwhelming majority of Gambians who seek only legitimate opportunities to study, invest, conduct business, participate in academic exchanges, attend professional conferences, receive medical care, or visit family members.
The Gambia is one of Africa’s oldest democracies and has earned international recognition for its peaceful democratic transition, commitment to constitutional governance, respect for human rights, and constructive engagement with the international community.
Our nation remains a trusted partner in regional peace, democratic governance, and economic cooperation.
Today, The Gambia is actively pursuing a development agenda centred on private sector growth, entrepreneurship, agricultural modernization, renewable energy, infrastructure development, digital transformation, and increased foreign direct investment. American businesses, investors, universities, and development institutions have much to gain from deeper engagement with these opportunities.
Greater mobility for legitimate travellers would strengthen trade, encourage investment, expand educational exchanges, and reinforce the long-standing bonds between our peoples.
As someone who has spent decades promoting economic diplomacy and fostering U.S.–Gambian commercial relations, I firmly believe that expanding engagement will produce greater mutual benefit than limiting it.
History has consistently demonstrated that enduring partnerships are built through dialogue, trust, and shared opportunity.
The celebration of America’s 250th anniversary is not only a commemoration of its remarkable history; it is also an opportunity to reaffirm the principles upon which its global leadership has long rested: openness, enterprise, innovation, fairness, and respect for those who seek opportunity through lawful and constructive means.
It is my sincere hope that this spirit will encourage renewed dialogue between Washington and Banjul, leading to policies that facilitate legitimate travel while addressing shared concerns through cooperation rather than distance.
The American Chamber of Commerce of The Gambia stands ready to support initiatives that deepen bilateral trade, encourage responsible investment, strengthen entrepreneurship, expand educational partnerships, and promote greater understanding between our two countries.
The friendship between The Gambia and the United States has endured for decades.
There is every reason to believe that its strongest chapter still lies ahead.
May this historic anniversary serve not only as a celebration of America’s remarkable past but also as the beginning of an even stronger partnership built on mutual respect, shared prosperity, and enduring friendship.
