The event was held recently with 17 students representing various African countries at the Regional Education Office in Brikama. The competition was aimed at celebrating the establishment of then Organization of African Unity (OAU) now African Union (AU) which was established on the 9th September, 1999 at Sirte-Libya.
The competition also seeks to uncover intelligent, responsible and well-informed youngsters, who take an active interest in the world around them.
After a keenly contested showdown, Saiko Bojang, a student at Yundum Barracks, who represented Malawi emerged the winner of this year's African Nation Championship Quiz. Rejoice C. Unegbu, who represented Nigeria came out second.
Majula Dampha representing Namibia secured the third spot, while Awa Camara for Kenya, took fourth position. Similarly, Isa Sabally representing Guinea Bissau settled at the fifth place.
At the event, Kaddijatou Danso, a Marketing and Media Relationship Officer at Yonna Foreign Exchange Bureau, said the event signifies Take-M's commitment to education and willingness to train and develop young students to become responsible individuals in the future.
"As a Gambian-owned company, we stand firmly to support individuals, businesses and institutions in our quest to contribute effectively to National Development ranging from health, education, and sports amongst others".
She encouraged the participating students to always have self-confidence inorder to explore the opportunities in life.
"I will quote from CICERO who says: “If you have no confidence in yourself, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won even before you have started.” she added
She equally encouraged all to be passionate in whatever they do and stay committed to achieving their dreams.
Mr Tunde, CEO of Take-M, described the participating students as intelligent and talented and that they want a different thing, but there is no room accorded them.
"They need to be exposed and this will encourage them to make research and that will enable them to know more about their continent"
Fatima Camara, a Copyright Inspector at the National Centre for Arts and Culture, on be half of the Director General of the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), gave a brief history of African Union.
"African Union is a continental union consisting of 55 members states, located on the continent of Africa.
She said Africa was first called ‘Alkebulan’ which means the land of the blacks or the mother of mankind.
‘The word was driven from the Arabic and versions of indigenous Africans languages. The continent of Africa has 40% percent of its Chromium,platinum, the largest reserve of Cobalt, Diamonds, platinum and Uranium in world are in Africa. Its holds 65% percent of the world’s arable land and 10% percent of the planet is internal Renewal fresh water source.The continent holds a huge proportion of the world’s natural resources both renewable and non renewable. Africa holds 30% percent of the world’s mineral reserves, 8% percent of the natural gas and 12% percent of the world’s oil reserves."
