University of Citizens - Gambia launched

The University of Citizens - Gambia recently launched the association of women and men aged 50 years and above. Members of the association are drawn from various backgrounds and walks of life to share experiences with the community through permanent learning.

The launched was organized in collaboration with NATCOM/UNESCO.
The main objective of the association is to enhance the quality of life and living conditions of senior citizens through knowledge sharing, continuous education, learning and engagement in community services.
USC-G is a non-profit organisation dedicated to senior citizen's health, well-being, welfare, and service to communities, playing advisory roles to Government, private sector, and social development through knowledge sharing, education, and advocacy, among others.
Jainaba Jallow-Njie, President of University of Citizens - Gambia said senior citizens should not be abandoned after spending most of their years working at various sectors in contributing to national development.
She argued that Governments globally should ensure senior citizens are taken care of by reducing transportation fares, cost of medication, living and other needs for them.

“Aging is inevitable and as such, we should prepare and work for a more conducive future for senior citizens,” she stated.
Lala Ceesay, a representative of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare said her ministry remains committed to providing the requisite support and leadership in making sure no one is left behind.
Juka Jabang, vice president of USC-Gambia said all that senior citizens need and yearn for is good health and financial independence.
Maimuna Sidibeh, acting Secretary General of the Gambia National Commission for The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation affirms their support to the University of Senior Citizens-Gambia.
The Association provided the opportunity for senior citizens to fully play their rightful role in the socio-economic development of the country, to enhance social cohesion and improve the physical and mental health of our elderly citizens, forge strategic partnerships on issues of public interest and, promote South-South and North-South cooperation among senior citizens thereby raising the visibility of The Gambia in the world of senior citizens.
