Established in 1992, GADHOH is an NGO committed to ensuring a society wherein persons with hearing impairments are given the opportunity to fully participate in national affairs and enjoy their full human rights as enjoyed by other citizens on a fair and equal basis.
The female wing was formed in the late 1990s, with its complex opened in 2008. The complex accommodates offices, a skills centre, nursery school, small restaurant and a play area for the children as well as a borehole.
Adama Jammeh, assistant treasurer of the Female wing of GADHOH, who also deputised the chairperson, commended the UNDP for supporting the night news interpretation on QTV that lasted for more than 15 months
"UNDP has been friend with persons with disability. It is not only GADHOH or the GADHOH female wing but to the whole disabled fraternity.”
Jammeh reminded that their daily work is to think of how to empower deaf people, especially women and children, and these things would definitely help more students that have completed basic and secondary education come and learn skills that would be beneficial to their lives, she said.
“Areas of training include tie and dye, tailoring, soap making, sewing, crocheting, baking, pastry making and sign language.”
For her part, Isatou Sayang, GADHOH women and Children’s officer, revealed that Buganala Foundation funded the first part of the project that is building the premises and also provided a school bus for transportation of the children.
"Since then some development, such as the restaurant and small shop, have been developed by the GADHOH female wing, supported by local and other partners in its drive to attain self-sustainability," she added.
The main purpose for establishing the female wing, she added, is to empower deaf women in The Gambia.
The handing over ceremony was graced by UNDP Resident Coordinator Aissata De, GADHOH Executive Director Mr. Dodou Loum, former TRRC deputy chairperson Madam Sosseh and The Gambia Federation of the Disabled Chairperson Muhammed Krubally.
