Pirang mourns as ‘Back-way’ claims another young life

One Lamin Bojang, a young man in his twenties and a resident of Pirang, Kombo East was recently reported to have died while on the perilous voyage to Europe.

The perilous undertaking, which has become a daily dream for many youngsters in the Gambia in their attempt to reach European shores, has claimed and continues to wreak havoc in Gambian communities.

Yet many are tempted to undertake this deadly journey due to lack of prospects and limited job opportunities in the country.

Lamin’s family weep over his demise, as the deceased is said to be the first son of his mother.

The deceased was described by friends and family as one who was like a rock in supporting his family, always providing shelter to all so long as he has the means.

Nasiya Dumbuya, a close relative to the deceased explained that Lamin embarked on this perilous journey due to pressure and dreams for a "better life" and to rescue the family from poverty.

"He was driven by hope to believing that Europe is the only solution. I'm saddened to hear his demise. My heart griefs but tears could not flow from my eyes considering the struggles he faces on the journey." she said.

Nasiya added that Lamin was an iconic and benevolent individual and the whole of Pirang could attest to that as he was a devoted Muslim.

"We shall continue reminiscing about the happy times we had with him." she added.

To that end, Nasiya called on youth to desist from this perilous journey as it is claiming many lives, adding that they can stay and make it the country.

"One-day, hopefully not very far as it is a matter of time, The Gambia will be a better place, where everyone can aim to build its own destiny." she stated.
