NA unveils 5-year plan to bolster governance, public engagement

The National Assembly of The Gambia last Friday launched its comprehensive Strategic Plan for 2025-2029 at a ceremony held at Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre.

The ambitious five-year roadmap supported by the European Union and International IDEA aims to strengthen the legislature's effectiveness, enhance transparency, and deepen public engagement in the democratic process.

The landmark event presided over by His Excellency, the Vice President, Muhammed B.S. Jallow was also graced by members of the National Assembly, senior government officials, representatives from civil society organizations, European Union officials and development partners.

At the event, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Speaker of the National Assembly hailed the Strategic Plan as a pivotal framework that will guide the National Assembly’s effort to better serve the Gambian people.

"This Strategic Plan is not just a document; it is our solemn commitment to the citizens of The Gambia. It outlines our vision for a more responsive, accountable, and accessible National Assembly that truly reflects the aspirations of our nation. Over the next five years, we will dedicate ourselves to transforming this institution into a beacon of democratic excellence."

However, the newly launch plan is built upon several key pillars including: Enhancing Legislative Scrutiny and Oversight improving Transparency and Access to Information Boosting Public Participation and Engagement Strengthening Institutional Capacity Promoting Good Governance and Ethical Conduct.

Also speaking, Kalipha M. Bbaye, clerk of the National Assembly, elaborated on the collaborative effort behind the plan's development.

"This Strategic Plan is the culmination of extensive consultations with all stakeholders, including our valued staff, Members of Parliament, civil society, and our international partners," he stated.

"It reflects a shared vision for a modern, effective, and people-centered parliament. Its implementation will be supported by robust frameworks, to ensure we connect meaningfully with every Gambian."

Representatives of development partner present at the launch commended the National Assembly for its forward-looking approach and pledged continued support for its implementation. 

However, this Strategic Plan 2025-2029 is expected to usher in a new era of parliamentary development in The Gambia, fostering greater public trust and ensuring that the National Assembly plays an even more pivotal role in the nation's progress.

The leadership of the Assembly called upon all Gambians to engage with the plan and support its successful implementation for a stronger, more democratic Gambia.
