The ceremony, was held at the school campus at Fajara, under the theme “Curious Minds Are Great Minds”
Speaking on the importance of the theme, Ms. Nafisa Binte Shafique, Country Representative of UNICEF, reminded students that curiosity is the spark that ignites learning, the fuel for discovery, and the foundation for growth.
“It is the quality that drives you to ask questions, to explore new ideas, and to understand the world around you. But curiosity is not only just about learning about yourself or for yourself.” she explained.
“It is also about understanding your role in the world, your rights, and how you can make a difference for others. It is a very special week for us as UNICEF and also as the Gambia, one of the countries who ratified the UNCRC long back, 35 years back. So, we are celebrating the World Children's Day this week, and this coincides with that.”
She reminded them that education is about more than just knowledge, saying it's about shaping one into compassionate, responsible, and empowered individuals, who will lead with kindness and integrity.
“As you celebrate your achievements today, and we all gather to celebrate you, take a moment to reflect on how you can continue to grow, not just in knowledge, but in your ability to help others, to be curious about the world beyond your own, and to stand up for the rights of every child. Congratulations to all of you for your hard work and dedication.”
The UNICEF country rep encouraged students to think beyond their own world and ask themselves, ‘how can I help’ by using their education, creativity, and curiosity to help other children who might not have the same chances.
Charles Nguli, Head of Junior School, underscored the importance of education, noting that achievement comes through hard work, commitment, perseverance, and such virtues.
“I want to encourage even those who are not getting awards today to nurture these values for greater heights, not only for the prizes, but for a bright future.”
Furthermore, he acknowledged the remarkable contribution of the board of governors, whom he said, have been with them all through.
“You provided for us and you’ve always been there to advise, support, provide your resources, which are enormous. We will continue to partner with you. We look forward for more guidance as we travel through this academic year. Let's celebrate the achievements for these young ones today.” he said.
