Kalifa Darboe, a 38-year-old native of Madina Sedia in North Bank Region is appealing for financial assistance to undergo a kidney transplant overseas.

According to a medical report issued by The Gambia’s main referral hospital, Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital and endorsed by Dr Mustapha Bittaye, Director of Health Services for the  Ministry of Health, Kalifa presented to the Accident and Emergency Unit of Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital on 5th September 2023 a 2 week history of dry cough and vomiting.

The report added that, the young man also presented a week history of generalised tonic chronic convulsions on one occasion.

The report further said that, Kalifa has been a known hypertensive patient for the past 3 years and was diagnosed with malaria during admission.

“After a series of investigations, a diagnosis of uranic encephalopathy and severe malaria was made and the patient was put on emergency hemodialysis until his condition became stable. He is currently on chronic hemodialysis treatment programme. He comes for treatment three times a week,” the report also said.

Following various examinations and review of Kalifa’s case, the hospital management board recommended that “the realisation of kidney transplant overseas provided that he has a compatible donor.” The hospital management board also said that Kalifa is currently stable and fit for kidney transplant.
