On Saturday, May 17, 2025, Longman Methodist Lower Basic School in Brikama achieved a remarkable victory in the highly competitive Take-M Transformation 2025 national spelling competition.

Ida Jarju, the talented representative from the school, displayed exceptional skill and confidence, ultimately outpacing 21 other talented contestants in the final round of this prestigious national event. Her impressive performance earned her a prize of D10,000, accompanied by an elegantly crafted gold cup, symbolizing her achievement and dedication.

This year’s competition saw participation from 72 schools across the nation, with only 22 schools from diverse areas, including the West Coast Region (WCR), Banjul, Kanifing Municipality, and the Lower River Region (LRR), making it to the final phase.

Take-M is a literacy program focused on helping children in Lower Basic Schools develop competency in reading and spelling skills.

In his remarks, Tunde MN Ogundimu, the executive director of Take-M Transformation, stated that the spelling competition aims to enhance children's spelling and reading abilities at a young age, saying: “English is a business language. Many students fail examinations due to their lack of understanding of the language,” he explained. However, he believes that the spelling bee will assist these children in mastering the language and answering examination questions with ease.

He noted that while the organization aimed to involve schools from all seven regions of The Gambia, they faced financial constraints that prevented them from including all schools.

Ogundimu called on philanthropists, the private sector, and development partners to support Take-M Transformation in organizing more educational programs for students. He acknowledged the contributions of Africell, Unique Solution, Gambia National Petroleum Company, Kaira Consultancy, individual donors, and others, expressing appreciation for their support.

He urged parents and teachers to continue encouraging their children to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for success.

Malang Kuyateh, a member of Take-M Transformation, emphasised that no participant would leave as a loser at the end of the competition, stating that everyone would be a winner in some way. He advised participants to take their time and thoughtfully answer the questions.

Kuyateh also expressed gratitude to the parents for attending the competition, noting that their presence demonstrated their concern for their children's education.

Bakary Manneh, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kaira Consultancy and Chairman of Take-M Transformation, commended the organization for hosting what he described as an important event. He encouraged the students to value their education and contribute positively to the development of society, adding: “Education is important but can be ineffective if one cannot make an impact in their community,” he told the pupils.
