Soma, The Gambia - 23 June 2025: The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), with the support of the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a three-day internal validation workshop to review and refine its forthcoming Strategic Plan 2025–2029. The workshop is taking place from 23 to 25 June 2025 in Soma, Lower River Region.

This strategic initiative represents a critical milestone in the IEC’s continued efforts to enhance institutional performance, strengthen electoral systems, and ensure operational readiness for the 2026 Presidential Election and subsequent Legislative and Local Government Elections in 2027.

The forthcoming plan is designed to consolidate achievements from the previous electoral cycle while addressing emerging priorities for democratic consolidation and inclusive political participation in The Gambia.

The internal validation workshop provides a platform for the Commission’s leadership and technical teams to engage in structured reflection on the strategic direction of the institution over the next five years. Key areas under review include institutional capacity building, communication, stakeholder engagement and operational preparedness. The process aims to ensure that the Strategic Plan is robust, results-oriented, and responsive to the evolving electoral landscape.

At the opening ceremony, Joseph Colley, Vice Chairman of the IEC emphasized the importance of institutional planning in ensuring credible and transparent elections.

“This strategic planning process reaffirms the Commission’s commitment to excellence, professionalism, and service to the people of The Gambia. It reflects our shared vision to continuously strengthen electoral integrity and public trust in democratic processes,” he noted.

Mr. James Monibah, Project Manager of the EU-UNDP GREAT Project, highlighted the longstanding partnership between UNDP and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), stating: “In The Gambia, UNDP has provided significant support to the IEC to strengthen the country’s electoral infrastructure and advance its democratic processes. Between 2021 and 2023, UNDP refurbished and equipped several regional IEC offices including those in Kanifing, Brikama, Kerewan, Mansakonko, and Basse, thereby enhancing the Commission’s operational efficiency and preparedness for future elections. UNDP’s support to the electoral cycle places strong emphasis on promoting human rights and ensuring gender equality at all levels of electoral engagement.”

The validation exercise is being supported through the EU-UNDP GREAT Project, which provides technical and financial assistance to national institutions engaged in governance reform, civic education, electoral support, and anti-corruption efforts. The support for the IEC’s strategic planning process aligns with broader objectives to foster accountable, inclusive, and participatory governance in The Gambia. The validation of the IEC Strategic Plan is part of a series of targeted interventions aimed at reinforcing electoral preparedness and public confidence in state institutions.

The validation workshop will continue through 25 June 2025. Upon completion, the Strategic Plan 2025–2029 will undergo finalization, paving the way for its formal adoption and implementation. The plan is expected to serve as a guiding framework for the Commission’s interventions and resource mobilization efforts over the 2026-2027 electoral cycle.
