The project, funded by Amplify Change and implemented by Girls’ Pride Gambia, used the last mile approach to eradicate period poverty on how to make handmade reusable sanitary pads.
Following the conclusion of the respective capacity building trainings, Girls’ Pride Gambia provided raw materials for the community youth educators to establish reusable pads corners in their respective communities.
Fatoumatta Kassama, Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Girls’ Pride Gambia explained that all community representatives have been tasked to organise step down training for girls and young women in the respective communities which are currently ongoing.
She added that the community youth educators have so far trained 390 adolescent girls and young women as well as produced 2124 handmade reusable sanitary pads, and 655 reusable storage pads from locally available materials in The Gambia.
“Girls’ Pride Gambia also conducts workshops/training on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights/Comprehensive Sexuality Education (Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Harmful Traditional Practices, Mental Health, STIs, among others.”
These trainings, she went on, also provide skills training on reusable pad making/production, offer online counseling and consultancy services.
Over the years, she added, thousands of young people including boys, girls, teachers, youth community leaders among others have benefited from the organisation’s training aimed to break the cycle.
