A nine‑year‑old girl, Binta Njie, of Wellingara is in urgent need of support to undergo overseas medical treatment after being diagnosed with a serious heart condition.

According to a medical report seen by The Point and signed by Dr. Emon Majdabadi of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Binta suffers from a ventricular septal defect (VSD) and rheumatic heart disease.

Her echocardiogram revealed mitral valve thickening with stenosis and regurgitation, aortic valve thickening with moderate regurgitation, a 1cm membranous VSD with left‑to‑right shunt, and possible infective endocarditis of the pulmonary valve.

Binta was admitted at the MRC clinic for investigation and treatment. Although she was initially suspected of having infective endocarditis, cultures and inflammatory markers were negative, and antibiotics were discontinued.

She was discharged on diuretics and penicillin prophylaxis. Dr Majdabadi stressed that while the MRC can continue to manage her medically, Binta urgently requires surgical repair of her VSD and replacement of her mitral and aortic valves—procedures that cannot be performed in The Gambia.

Her family, who have exhausted all efforts within their means, are now appealing to government authorities, philanthropists, and well‑wishers to help provide the financial support needed for her overseas surgery.

“This young girl’s survival depends on urgent intervention. Every contribution could make the difference between life and death,” Sarjo Susso, the girl’s mother said.

“Together with my family, we have tried everything. We have spent almost all our resources just to ensure that she is okay and able to return to school, something she truly loves. Unfortunately, all our efforts have been in vain. Now, we are left with no option but to seek help from the public.”
