Addressing this international forum, Deputy Speaker Njie emphasised the significance of dialogue and cooperation in promoting parliamentary diplomacy and resolving conflicts worldwide.
He outlined the crucial role of lawmakers in upholding core principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in tackling global challenges.
Hon. Njie specifically made reference to the ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Somalia, and the Russia-Ukraine war.
He acknowledged the country’s commitment to opposing violence and aggression and upholding international human rights laws and UN resolutions as a foundation for conflict resolution.
On the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Deputy Speaker recognised the urgent need for concerted efforts towards peace and reconciliation.
He expressed government's solidarity with the international community in condemning all forms of violence and aggression, particularly the recent Israeli military operations in Gaza.
To that end, he calls for an immediate ceasefire and emphasised the need to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation facing the Palestinian people.
As head of the delegation, Njie urged the UN Security Council to take decisive action and pass a unified resolution condemning Israel and ending the war.
The Gambian delegation comprises Hon. Fatou Cham, member for Sanimentereng; Assan Touray, member for Bakau, Kebba Jallow and Musa Cham, members for Jarra Central and Serrekunda respectively. Sainey Konteh, Principal Table Clerk, was also part of the Gambian delegation.
Established in 1889, the IPU is a global forum bringing together lawmakers to discuss critical issues and adopt resolutions. The theme for this year's event is-"Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building Bridges for Peace and Understanding."
