The Gambia is gearing up to participate in the inaugural ECOWAS Festival of Arts and Culture, an event jointly organised by the Economic Community of West African States, the West African Economic and Monetary Union and the Republic of Senegal. The festival is planned for late November and early December in Dakar and will bring together creatives, cultural institutions and youth groups from across the region.

During a press conference held by the National Center for Arts and Culture under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, officials provided an overview of the country’s preparations. ECOFEST will feature a wide range of activities including live performances, craft exhibitions, art competitions, film screenings and youth dialogues aimed at fostering cultural exchange and regional cooperation.

The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Socio political changes and crises in West Africa’ and how culture can respond to these challenges. The theme is intended to stimulate reflection on the role of culture in addressing social and political issues affecting communities in the region.

Sanna Jarjou, Director of Literature, Performing and Fine Arts at the National Center for Arts and Culture, underscored the importance of the event. He said ECOFEST carries both symbolic and community significance and promotes integration, social cohesion and cultural development, which are values upheld by ECOWAS and UEMOA.

Ebrima A.K. Sanyang from the Gambia Tourism Board encouraged the selected delegates to use the platform to showcase Gambian culture and support tourism growth. He called on them to represent the country with pride and to highlight its cultural richness and natural attractions.

President of the Musicians Union of The Gambia. Momodou M. Sarr explained that the selection of artistes followed an audition and evaluation process led by a panel of experts. He said the final group reflects the talent and diversity of The Gambia’s music industry and will present a strong representation of the country at the festival.
