In an effort to promote healthy nutrition practices through impactful media campaigns and community outreach, a new journalist network called "Media Network for Nutrition-The Gambia" was recently established in The Gambia.

This network seeks to direct efforts towards fighting malnutrition and micro-nutrient deficiencies, while coordinating and promoting nutrition related issues in The Gambia.

It also seeks to serve as a cornerstone in amplyfing positive approaches between stakeholders, the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA) and other organisations in a broader quest to promote malnutrition and micronutriments.

The network regards food security and access to good nutrition as fundamental human rights. However, it also seeks to pursue the need to have a common vision between networks of journalists/communicators to defend harmonised positions on the major issues and challenges of nutrition and food security in The Gambia and Africa at large.

Through the Network, media practitioners now have an opportunity to play a significant role in the crisis situations experienced by other African countries.

Also, among their objectives is to contribute to the wider dissemination of information and effective communication in the field of nutrition in a multi-sectoral dimension.

In addition, they are determined to influence political and economic decision-makers on ways to improve the nutrition policy environment with a consistent allocation of financial resources and to ensure the monitoring of national commitments related to nutrition with each stakeholder.

Furthermore, network will serve as a means to mobilise journalists and communicators in favour of nutrition, to create strong relations with the SUN Movement for West and Central Africa and the African Journalists and Communicators Initiative for Nutrition (IJ-CAN) main Body based in Burkina Faso.

In essence, the Network is set up with the context to promote the multisectoral approach for coordination in the fight against malnutrition; to impact communities for appropriate behavior change to combat malnutrition and hunger in The Gambia and strengthen the capacities of its members on themes and issues relating to nutrition.

Thus, Media Network for Nutrition-The Gambia will henceforth foster strong relations with other Nutrition organisations/Networks across the African continent on issues relating to nutrition and to jointly work with other agencies/networks across the African continent in the fight against malnutrition and promotion of nutrition in the continent.
