
In his keynote address, Brigadier General (Rtd) Serign Modou Njie, Minister for Defence, expressed profound gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency President Adama Barrow, for approving the promotions. He noted that this gesture reflects the President’s steadfast commitment to the welfare and professional development of the armed forces, demonstrating his trust in their capabilities.
Minister Njie commended the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General M. Amat O.A. Cham, and the entire GAF Command for their exemplary leadership, emphasising their role in strengthening the institution.
The Minister reminded the newly promoted officers of the significant responsibilities that come with their new ranks, urging them to uphold the constitution and to serve with integrity and dedication.
Major General Mamat O. Cham, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of GAF, echoed similar sentiments, praising the officers for their competence, discipline, and commitment to service. He thanked President Barrow for his continued support and acknowledged the importance of commissioning new Officer Cadets as a critical injection of leadership into the GAF.
To the promoted officers, CDS Cham said: “Your subordinates will look up to you for inspiration, guidance, and courage. Let your actions inspire confidence and pride amongst both your troops and the citizens you swore to protect.”
General Cham also praised the Promotional Exam (PROMEX) Board, chaired by Deputy CDS Major General Ousman Gomez, and the GAF Training School (GAFTS) for maintaining high standards in military education, while recognising the essential role that the families of the officers play in their success.
The CDS reaffirmed GAF’s commitment to ongoing reforms, including revisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service (TACOS), improved troop welfare, and modernisation efforts, adding: “We are building a professional, apolitical, and mission-ready force.”
Lieutenant Colonel Pierre Beyai also delivered remarks on behalf of the newly promoted officers, emphasising their steadfast loyalty and cooperation within the service.
“We reaffirm our collective commitment to professional development, operational excellence, and institutional transformation. We are prepared to contribute meaningfully to the future of our armed forces and to enhance its reputation both within the sub-region and beyond,” he stated.
