Diaspora Club, a group of Gambians residing in different countries in Europe and America on Monday laid the foundation stone and signed a contract for the construction of a new maternity ward in Chamen, Nianija, Central River Region.

This new maternity ward will be built within the perimeter of the existing Health Facility in the village.

At the event, Jojo Mbaye, president of the Club, said the organization’s sole aim to provide aid to vulnerable groups and villages.

“We have studied and done survey in so many communities. However,  we realized that Chamen, is deserving of this project. We are made to understand the challenges of this village. Women face numerous challenges when it comes to child birth.

She expressed their resolve to ensure that every woman in this village has a decent delivery in a ward that has sufficient equipment which can prevent complications for both the mother and child.

Mbaye called for the patience and cooperation among residents for the easy and smooth construction of the ward.

She equally called for both government support and Gambians in the Diaspora to support and fund this worthy cause they are doing in the development of the country.

Speaking on behalf of the villagers, Jainaba M. Jallow, Lady Councilor, expressed gratitude to the club for their gesture.

“The current hospital in our community is the first hospital in Nianija. However, the community is big without enough medical equipment and women are faced with the worst experience. The maternity ward’s space accommodates only one person in labour ward. However, over three women share the same labor ward for delivery leaving others to wait outside or deliver at home.”

She revealed that they’ve witnessed women giving birth outside due to congestion of the ward and this often lead to complications.

“We thanked the Diaspora Club for this initiative as they are about to make our worst nightmares history,” she concluded.

Adama Cham, Health Clinic Chairman of Chamen, described the initiative as move in the right direction, saying; “we have called for help for the improvement or construction of the ward for several years and we thank God that the Diaspora Club have answered. So, we will be happy to see that the women of this community will have a modest pregnancy and child birth.” he explained.

Mam Busso Jah, PRO of the Club, said the targeted amount for the construction of the ward is between $80,000 to $100,000.

“The capacity of the unit will be about 35 beds, 15 delivery beds and 20 admissions beds. If we have our resources and fundings intact the construction should take nine months to a year to complete.”

She also called for support from potential partners for the smooth construction and realization of the dream of Chamen women.

Abdoulie Batchily, contractor assured the community of a standard maternity ward and further called for the cooperation of all to ensure that the project is executed on time.
