The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to The Gambia recently awarded scholarships to students of The University of The Gambia for the 2025 academic year during The Gambia-China Bantaba held at the UTG Kanifing Campus.

The scholarship is an annual programme (since 2017) for both students and staff of the University of The Gambia, who are excelling in their specific areas. So, the package involves full annual tuition fee for the beneficiaries which is paid directly to the UTG.

At the event, H.E. Ambassador Liu Jin emphasised the importance of linguistic and cultural exchanges in strengthening bilateral relations between China and The Gambia.

The scholarship, he said, is to support outstanding and underprivileged students to encourage them to work harder in order to build a better future for themselves and contribute to national development.

He spoke of China’s commitment to contributing to the wellbeing of the people across the globe and so they would continue to support The Gambia in all ways they can.

He, therefore, encouraged outstanding Gambian students to learn about Chinese culture and become envoys of friendship between the two countries.

For his part, Prof. Herbert Robinson, Vice Chancellor for the University of The Gambia, said the scholarship will serve as a motivation and a way for beneficiaries to enhance their education and work towards national development.

He acknowledged the support of the Embassy, which he said, has been sponsoring at least 20 students every year in various majors to pursue their degree programmes.

To that end, he appealed for the continuation of the support to help underprivileged students to enable them go through their degree programmes.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, Haddy L. Mboob, a student thanked the Chinese government for awarding them the opportunity to achieve their goals.
