The scholarship is an annual programme (since 2017) for both students and staff of the University of The Gambia doing excellently in their specific areas.
The scholarship benefit involves full annual tuition fee for the beneficiaries which is paid directly to the UTG.
Prof. Herbert Robinson, Vice Chancellor for the University of The Gambia said the scholarship will serve as motivation and a way for beneficiaries to enhance their education and work towards national development.
He added that the Embassy has been sponsoring at least 20 students every year in various majors to pursue their degree programmes.
He appealed for the continuation of the support to help underprivileged students go through their degree programmes.
His Excellency Liu Jin, the People’s Republic of China Ambassador to The Gambia said the scholarship is to support outstanding and underprivileged students to encourage them to work harder in order to build a better future for themselves and contribute to national development.
“China is committed to contributing to the wellbeing of the people across the globe and we will continue to support The Gambia in all ways we can,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, Kemo Fatty, the president of UTG Students Union thanked the Chinese government for awarding them the opportunity to achieve their goals.
