The Bottrop Ex-Students Association (BESA) on Saturday held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), bringing together alumni to review achievements, discuss challenges, and plan for the future of their alma mater.

The meeting provided a platform for ex-students to reconnect and actively contribute to the development of Bottrop School. A key focus of the gathering was mobilising resources for the rehabilitation of the school’s access road, a critical route used daily by students, school buses, and community members.

Lamin Darboe, president of the association said their primary goal is to ensure accountability to their members who have contributed to the school’s projects and to plan for initiatives that will improve the school environment.

“Rehabilitating this road is essential not just for the school but for the wider community.”

Darboe emphasised that improving the school is a collective responsibility.

“A school thrives when everyone plays a part: alumni, parents, teachers, and the community. By contributing to Bottrop, we are supporting our own families, our neighbourhood, and the students who will shape the future,” he added.

Moreover, the AGM included a lunch and sale of merchandise such as t-shirts and coffee mugs, with proceeds going towards the road project.

Beyond fundraising, the event also featured mentorship sessions, where alumni shared experiences and guidance with current students, inspiring them to pursue excellence in academics and skills development.

Over the years, BESA has undertaken several initiatives, including cleansing exercises, tree planting, providing dustbins, organising speech and prize-giving ceremonies, and facilitating school excursions.

Future plans outlined at the AGM include refurbishing the library and main hall, improving sports development, enhancing water and sanitation facilities, and boosting the overall aesthetics of the school environment.

The AGM also led to the election of a new Social Secretary, reinforcing the executive team’s role in driving BESA’s projects forward.

Members expressed pride in the turnout, highlighting the strong commitment of alumni to give back and support the alma mater.
