The training seeks to improve and boost the capacity of students in news-gathering, production and presentation with specific focus on idea development, sourcing, research, production, and news presentation and interviewing.
Speaking after the training, Williams highlighted that, the areas covered formed the bedrock of any proper journalistic career, citing that there are certain specifics and ways needed to carry out some of the areas he taught during the training.
Further, he reminded that it was more of him trying to share and discuss best practices and methods using the craft they all love so much.
Understanding what the challenges of Gambian journalism are and how best to overcome them, he reminded that it is time journalists change and improve in the field.
“You have to be able to change and improve, and the best way of changing and improving is by surrounding yourself with people who would always force you to think anew and to be a better version of yourself. If you want to grow professionally, you can’t do that in isolation. You should surround yourself with people who can help you grow and that’s how you build capacity over the long run.”
Essa Bah, a student and one of the participants, highlighted the importance of the training, describing it as impactful as it gave him the opportunity to be au-fait with techniques in news presentation, interviews and angling.
“The training has taught me areas that I haven’t known before. So, having the opportunity to learn from Esau will really help in my career and putting what I learned into practice.”
The training attracted students from certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma classes within the school.
