Alliance Francaise and partners recently convened a five-day intensive workshop under the project Agri-Accelerator Learning Programme for 25 agric business coaches and advisors (entrepreneurs) on Responsible Agricultural Investment (RAI).

The programme focuses on enhancing their capacity to guide youth towards responsible agricultural investment (RAI) practices. This learning programme is a key initiative under the Agri-Accelerator 2.0 Project, which seeks to hasten and sustain the growth of responsible agri-enterprises led by youth.

At the opening ceremony, Justine Guschlbauer, Director Alliance Francaise revealed that RAl practices ensure a triple performance of investments in terms of profits, people and planet.

“The Responsible Agricultural Investment (RAI) Accelerator Toolkit, gives you the resources needed to help young agri-entrepreneurs build businesses that balance profit with social and environmental responsibility.”

She told the participants that  the knowledge and skills they will be exposed to during the event should have a ripple effect; touching the lives of young agri-entrepreneurs, strengthening agricultural value chains and contributing to The Gambia's Green Recovery-Focused National Development Plan.

For her part, Shibu Rampedi, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative in the Gambia, said FAO of the United Nations (FAO) believes that responsible investment in agriculture and food systems is key to a better production and a better life.

She noted that responsible investment goes beyond financial gains, it ensures that agricultural businesses contribute to food security and nutrition, respect human rights, protect the environment, and enhance the livelihoods of local communities.

“The role of business coaches and advisors is invaluable. You are the mentors, guides, and facilitators who will shape the future of agricultural entrepreneurship in The Gambia.”

She assured that FAO is committed to making agriculture a practical and attractive career possibility for the youth.

Further, the opening was followed by interactive technical sessions, where participants were engaged on insights into the challenges and opportunities of responsible agricultural investment in The Gambia. This five-days session will be followed by virtual refresher sessions in March and a mentoring phase from March to April 2025 to reinforce learning outcomes.
