The project seeks to increase awareness about women’s participation in politics and other leadership positions.
The project dubbed- "Strengthening Women's Political Participation and Leadership Through Reformed Legislation’, was held at the Kaira Konko Hall, Soma.
However, research revealed that women have been hugely under-represented when it comes to politics and in decision-making processes.
Reports show that in The Gambia, women constitute about 58.68% of the voting population, however only 5 members out of the 58 members of the parliament are women; 3 elected, whilst 2 nominated. This, figure, denotes about just 3% of representation in the National Assembly.
At the opening ceremony, Ansumana Camara the National Coordinator of Activista The Gambia, explained the idea behind the project.
"This project is to prepare young people especially women for the next electoral cycle so that they can meaningfully take part in politics and also take part in public positions and participate in decision-making which affects their lives and livelihood."Ansumana added.
Fatoumatta Fatty, a representative of PDOIS, dwelled on the importance of women involvement in politics.
"I am urging all women to come out and participate in politics and stand for positions. Women should have the confidence and contest for political position's because we have equal rights as men."
Dawda Fatty, a member of the Gambia Action Party, advised political parties to give chance to the women to effectively participate in political positions.
He made reference to the old adage that when one empowered a woman it is like you empowered a whole nation.
Madani Joof, a member of Youth Branch Inter Party Committee, Lower River Region branch, revealed that advocating for women leadership is key in any development, as it can empower women in political positions.
