We have worked to protect our waters - DPS Darboe

The deputy permanent secretary, Finance and Admin, at the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters, has said that through dialogue and commitment, The Gambia government and the European Union have worked to protect waters while promoting economic growth and community well-being.

Malang Darboe, the deputy permanent secretary, made this remark on Tuesday 20 February 2024 at the 5th Joint Committee Meeting of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement between The Gambia and the European Union.

“This meeting symbolises years of shared efforts, grounded in mutual respect and cooperation, with a joint responsibility for our oceans’ future,” DPS Darboe said.

He urged participants to reaffirm their commitment to sustainability, equity, and inclusivity, while envisioning thriving oceans and prosperous communities for generations to come.

During the two days, participants were expected to discuss various aspects of fisheries management, from economy to science among other things.

In a statement on the occasion, the director of Fisheries, Madam Anna Mbenga-Cham, noted that collective knowledge, shaped by unique experiences, would guide the meeting through the complexities of fisheries management, leading to a more resilient and fair future.

The meeting was chaired by Madam Fanta B.S. Manneh, deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters.
