As part of the nationwide tour ended last week, students of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of The Gambia sensitized Bureng community dweller Tuesday, 3rd of September, sensitized on personal data protection and privacy.

The sensitization, held in collaboration with the Western Africa Regional Digital Integration Program (WARDIP) was poised to bolster awareness across communities on data protection issues amid growing concern for increased digital risk.

In his opening address, the vice chairperson of the tour, Kawsu Saidy, stressed the mounting significance  of personal data protection and privacy in today’s highly digitalized world.

Mr Saidy noted that from banking to social interactions, the risks of data breaches and identity theft have drastically mounted as more and more aspects of human life get digitized.

He underscored that the rationale behind the sensitization program was to equip the Bureng community with the knowledge and tools necessary to safeguard their personal information and maintain their privacy.

The deputy chairperson’s opening statement was trailed by a series of high-level presentations on data protection as facilitators took over.

Topping it all was an interactive session that availed participants the platform to express their concerns as well as ask questions to clear doubts. A range of concerns surfaced from such discussions, ranging from concerns over data collected by mobile apps and the security of online financial transactions.

Some of these concerns were addressed by the trainers, who took the opportunity to urge vigilance among community members.
