His visit seeks to assess the protection of the right to life, examine unlawful killings and efforts to prevent them and ensure accountability, and review the legal framework and practices surrounding the death penalty.
We held a frank and fruitful discussion on the gains made and continuing threats to human rights, particularly the right to life, since 2017. We highlighted incidents of alleged unlawful killings, the responses of public authorities, and outstanding questions of justice and accountability. We also discussed the legal and institutional reforms needed to protect life, prevent abuses and end impunity.
This is the second visit to The Gambia under this UN mandate, following the first in 2014. We look forward to the Special Rapporteur’s report and recommendations, and call for meaningful follow-up by the relevant authorities.
The right to life demands effective protection. Every unlawful killing demands accountability. Every victim deserves justice.
We also shared our human rights reports with the Special Rapporteur.
