The United Democratic Party (UDP) has warned its members and supporters against inflammatory rhetoric and intimidation ahead of the December 5, 2026, presidential election, following the circulation of an audio recording allegedly featuring a party member threatening staff of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and members of The Gambia Armed Forces.
In a statement issued by its Media and Communications Team, the party said the remarks, if verified, were unacceptable and inconsistent with its principles of peaceful democratic engagement.
“The UDP does not condone threats, intimidation, or any form of language that seeks to undermine the safety, dignity, or independence of our national institutions,” the statement said.
The party stressed that the IEC has a constitutional responsibility to administer elections, while The Gambia Armed Forces are responsible for safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and security.
It said both institutions must be allowed to carry out their duties in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of The Gambia, without threats, intimidation or undue pressure.
As the country prepares for the December polls, the UDP’s National Executive called on its members, supporters and sympathisers to exercise restraint, uphold discipline and conduct themselves responsibly in their political engagements, both online and offline.
The party said its pursuit of political change was rooted in democratic principles, respect for the rule of law and the will of Gambians expressed through credible, free and fair elections.
It added that disagreements with public institutions or officials should be addressed through lawful, peaceful and democratic means rather than threats or inflammatory rhetoric.
The UDP also urged Gambians across the political divide to reject violence, intimidation and hate-filled language, warning that partisan differences should not overshadow the country’s shared interests.
“A peaceful electoral environment is a collective responsibility that requires the commitment of political parties, electoral authorities, security institutions, the media, and every citizen,” the statement said.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful, transparent, credible and democratic electoral process, pledging to continue advocating for electoral integrity and accountability while respecting the law and the institutions entrusted with protecting the country’s democracy.
It concluded that the pursuit of political change must never come at the expense of national peace, unity and stability.
