Mayor Bensouda was speaking to Kerr Fatou Online Media Platform just after the election.
He said this election was part of the plans of the ruling party ahead of the 2026 presidential elections, adding that is why they spent a huge amount of the money just to win the election.
The UDP’s chairman of the campaign and organising committee also acknowledged that the election is a litmus test for 2026 presidential.
"As United Democratic Party (UDP), we have used a tactical approach in this election and we are saying things that are affecting the people of Massambeh and the government of President Adama Barrow is not doing anything to solve those issues," he said.
He indicated that the amount the government has spent to celebrate the 60th year of independence should be used to help the people of Massambeh Ward by providing them with basic social amenities such as hospitals, good roads and potable drinking water.
He emphasised that by looking at the country's economy and the living conditions of the Gambians, it’s not ideal to spend over 100 million dalasi just for celebration.
He added that the independence celebration should have been done low key and spent small amounts.
According to him, the election victory was a collective responsibility from all the UDP executives and party militants from home and abroad.
