The UDP Secretary General Darboe made the comments in an exclusive interview with West, Sankulleh Gibral Janko during the Information and Consultation Session with Political Party Leaders on the resumption of constitutional reform process at the International Conference Centre.
“Our party has also been in the forefront of advocating for constitutional reform and that we are committed to.
“It’s not lip service, we are not playing to the gallery,” he said. “When we say we want the constitutional reform we mean it.”
Recall: The Gambia’s Draft Constitution failed to pass the scrutiny stage at the second reading stage after failing to meet the required threshold votes in the 5th Legislative Chambers.
Although the Draft Constitution seemed to have wishes and aspirations of the people following wide public consultations, the legal document had contentious issues including retroactivity for presidential term limits and the secularity of the supreme book.
International IDEA held the first round of meeting with political party leaders before it was adjourned on 20 December, 2020 ahead of the electoral cycle.
The discussions with political parties and relevant stakeholders resumed recently with a view to having a consensus to reintroduce the Draft Constitution.
