Senior members of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) have had a veritable meeting with a high-powered delegation of the European Union in The Gambia.

The two delegations discussed matters of common interest, including political and economic stability of the country, democratic governance, pending reforms announced by the country in 2017, human rights, freedom of expression and other fundamental and constitutionally-guaranteed rights of citizens.

The two delegations also discussed the need to upscale the representation of women in national politics.  Past and upcoming elections were also discussed as well as the need to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.

The European Delegation indicated that its mandate includes consultations with all the major stakeholder and players of the national scene.

The meeting was very cordial and lasted over an hour. The two parties agreed to consult on a regular basis henceforth.
