The discussions were prompted by recent fuel price hikes that had already led some drivers to increase fares independently, raising concerns among the public.
As part of the agreement reached, transport fares within the Greater Banjul Area will increase by five dalasi (D5), while passengers traveling to the Foni West Coast Region will see an increase of up to fifteen dalasi (D15). However, the adjustment does not apply to motor tricycle bikes.
Authorities described the measure as a temporary response to mounting economic pressures, largely driven by global instability linked to the Middle East conflict, which has significantly pushed up fuel prices worldwide.
To ease the burden, the government disclosed that it has injected over D316 million in fuel subsidies for April alone, aimed at stabilizing the transport sector and protecting consumers from sharper fare increases.
The Ministry emphasized that discussions are ongoing and may lead to further adjustments, particularly for rural areas, as the situation evolves.
Officials also called for continued cooperation and understanding from all stakeholders, stressing that the current measures are necessary to navigate the economic challenges.
“The Ministry remains committed to ensuring safe, reliable, and affordable transportation for all Gambians,” the statement concluded.
