Fatoumatta Njai, who is widely called Touma Njai, and the current National Assembly Member (NAM) for Banjul South has called on stakeholders to actively advocate for the constitutional amendment Bill 2021 in order to have more females in the Parliament.

She made this remark at a 2-day capacity building training for NAMs organised by International Republican Institute (IRI) at the SDKJ Conference Centre on Thursday 27 Oct. 2022.

The training is designed to enhance women’s participation in politics and decision making.

The Banjul South lawmaker said women’s participation in politics and decision making is usually hindered by social, economic, religious and other related factors across the globe particularly in The Gambia.

Hon. Njai outlined her long-term stance in advocating women’s participation in politics and gender equity.

Hon. Njie has encouraged her colleagues and stakeholders to advocate for the amendment of the 2021 Bill.

Aja Fatou Mbye, the former deputy speaker of the National Assembly called for the support of male folks in empowering women, while calling on her fellow women to be more committed and ready to partake in the decision making process in the country.

Fabakary Tombong Jatta, the speaker of the National Assembly admitted that women political participation in The Gambia is low despite the legislative mechanisms that support their empowerment in their best interest.

"The two day training will build the capacity of NAMs with regard to an effective advocacy for women's political participation and decision making in the country."

The training is expected to address the current dynamics and foster understanding on the need for women empowerment in decision making.
