Officials from the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC) on Friday donated items worth over two hundred thousand dalasis (D200,000) to the Gambian army.

The donated items were received by the minister for defence and the army chief.

This noble gesture was in response to President Barrow’s calls for institutions to extend support to the Gambia Armed Force (GAF) since the government cannot do it alone. The items include smart-tv sets, generator, refrigerator and a cooker, which were handed over to the army by SSHFC acting managing director.

Held at the defence ministry in Banjul, the handing-over ceremony was attended by senior staff of SSHFC, army heads and other senior soldiers.

“We are very honored towards making a difference to the Gambia Armed Forces. The donation of the various items is a clear indication that SSHFC continues to take the lead in promoting social well-being of its members and non-members alike. Our strategic plan 2022-2026, obligates the Corporation to improve the livelihood of Gambians and Non-Gambian members alike and support the Government, communities, religious associations and individuals. This gesture clearly underscores this drive of the Corporation,’’ remarked Dodou Jain, the acting MD for SSHFC.

He added: “On behalf of the Management and the Board, we thank you all for giving us the opportunity to contribute to the Armed Forces.’’

Before receiving the items, Lieutenant General Yakuba A. Drammeh, the army chief, thanked SSHFC for the noble gesture, while describing as “timely donation and positive response from SSHFC”. He said the government cannot do it alone and more so in the context of The Gambia.  He also added it is not out of context to ask individuals or institutions to contribute towards the living and working conditions of the serving members of the Military.

For his part, Seringe Modou Njie, minister for defence, equally thanked SSHFC for taking the lead in responding and answering the call of the President.

“I understand this is part of your corporate social responsibilities, but many other companies could have done it. We are also waiting for them to do the same. But you as an agency taking the lead to support this magnificent gesture is laudable,” he says.

Therefore, the minister assured the housing corporation that the items will go a long way in improving the army living conditions.
