Senegal’s prime minister vows to reduce electricity tariff

May 29, 2025, 10:29 AM

Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has criticized the country’s electricity tariffs as among the highest in the world, with rates at 91.84 francs per kWh, trailing only behind Germany and Japan.

Speaking at the launch of the Invest in Senegal Forum, Sonko warned that these high costs risk deterring businesses and investors, especially compared to neighboring countries like Côte d’Ivoire where rates are significantly lower.

He pledged to reverse the previous government’s policy of exporting liquefied natural gas in favor of prioritizing domestic consumption, aiming to reduce energy costs and boost the industrial sector’s competitiveness.
