The Government of The Gambia has been informed of a road traffic accident that occurred on Tuesday, 23 April 2024, at approximately 14:55hrs, involving the ECOMIG Senegalese contingent stationed at Foni Command.

A contingent of 10 Senegalese soldiers was en route from Foni to Kerr Ayib Border post on official duty, comprising three military vehicles.

Unfortunately, at Kiang Wudayba, the last vehicle in the convoy was involved in a road traffic accident, resulting in the tragic loss of one soldier and injuries to nine others.

While the body of the deceased was taken to the mortuary for necessary documentation, the injured were transported to Bwiam Hospital.

In a display of solidarity and swift action, a Senegalese Special Military flight, bearing registration number 6w-TTE, safely landed at Banjul International Airport on the same day at 20:15hrs to evacuate the injured soldiers to Dakar Principal Level II Hospital.

Tonight, another military flight is scheduled to arrive at Banjul International Airport to transport the remains of the deceased soldier.

Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, and The Government of The Gambia extends its deepest condolences to the Senegalese Government and the entire Senegalese people during this difficult time.

This rapid response operation highlights the strong bond of cooperation and friendship between our two nations during this tragic moment.

The Gambia Government commends the swift action taken by all parties involved and expresses gratitude for their dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected by this unfortunate incident.
