Senegal temporarily bans TikTok

Aug 3, 2023, 12:07 PM

The Senegal government has temporarily banned the use of TikTok in Senegal, according to a statement released yesterday by the Ministry of Communication, Telecommunications and the Digital Economy.
The official release states: “The Minister of Communication, Telecommunications and the Digital Economy informs the public that it has been found that the TikTok application is the social network favoured by people with malicious intent to disseminate hateful and subversive messages threatening the stability of the country.”

It adds that as a result, the “TikTok social network is suspended in Senegal until further notice.”

Also, the Ministry has urged telephone operators to comply with the “notified requisitions”.

The temporary ban follows the arrest of main opposition figure Ousman Sonko and the dissolution of his political party PASTEF (the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity), which has sparked protests and chaos. The tension has led to two deaths already, according to the interior ministry.

Meanwhile, the short video hosting service is one of the world’s most popular, and it is also widely used across Africa.
