Senegal intensifies support for the media

May 9, 2025, 11:44 AM

Recognising that the media occupies a vital place in the life of the nation, Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has asked the government line authorities to intensify consultations with the various stakeholders in the media sector with a view to better supporting its professionalization and transformation.

This support to the media has been initiated in line with Senegal's democratic influence, while respecting the freedom of expression governed by the country’s current laws and regulations.

To this end, the president has indicated to the Government the need to continue efforts to support the restructuring and financing of press companies, particularly in the context of the rapid development of digital technology and artificial intelligence, with the necessary regulation of the social media.

In a spirit of co-construction of a viable economic model for a free, professional, and responsible media, Faye has asked the Minister of Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs to examine, in conjunction with the regulatory authorities (CNRA and ARTP), ways and means to implement, according to a consensual agenda, the recommendations and proposals of media stakeholder organizations regarding the Press Code and the systemic and sustainable transformation of the sector.

He has also asked the Prime Minister, the Minister of Communication and the Minister of Finance and Budget to define a renewed framework for financing and monitoring the implementation of the development plans of public press companies (RTS, SSPP "Le SOLEIL", SN APS and TDS SA).
