Senegal enters oil production era

Feb 25, 2025, 11:45 AM

The African Refinery Society (SAR) "is proud to announce the successful refining of Senegal's first crude oil, Sangomar", from the name of the offshore oil production site (central-west), the company said in a statement.

"After successful treatment and consistent results, the transfer of derivatives, such as fuel and diesel, is currently underway to dedicated storage areas," the statement added.

The company says it has refined 650,000 barrels of crude oil which produced 90,000 tonnes of miscellaneous products, including diesel, kerosene, petrol and butane gas. Let's remember that Senegal started its oil production in June in the Sangomar field where the Australian group Woodside Energy operates.

The country also became a gas producer at the end of December, which it shares with Mauritania, on their maritime border. Oil and gas production in Senegal will be destined for export and domestic consumption.

It will be far from reaching the levels of global and African giants like Nigeria. Billions of dollars in revenues are expected, along with an accelerated transformation of the economy.
