Salikene holds 35th annual ‘gamo’

The community of Salikene in Central Baddibou District, North Bank Region, on Saturday 4 March, 2023 organised its annual Gamo under the leadership of Mauritania and Saudi trained Sheikh Alh. Omar Ceesay.

The event gathers thousands of people from across the country and beyond for a night-long Qura’nic recitation and prayers.

The main convener Sheikh Omar Ceesay, 77, comes from a long line of renowned Islamic scholars and spiritual leaders. 

He dedicated a life time to teaching and propagating Islam in The Gambia and beyond. 

Sheikh Omar started studying the Holy Quran in Mauritania when he was 8 years old. In Mauritania, he memorised the Quran and also studied other Islamic Books during his 15 years of study in the country. He was one of the young friends of the late Sheikh Hattab Bojang in the city of Boulilimit, Mauritania in 1957 when the two were studying there. 

Upon his return from Mauritania, the young Sheikh Omar secured a scholarship for further studies at the University of Riyad in 1974.  The Sheikh did advanced Islamic studies at the University of Riyad from 1974 to 1978. He and the current Imam Ratib of Banjul, Alhagie Cherno Alieu Mass Kah studied together at the University of Riyad and happened to be roommates and friends to date. He leads a life dedicated to the teaching and propagation of Islam.
